A social networking site is a web server that enables users to register, make a personal profile, and interact with particular users. Using personal information, hobbies, images, and other elements, one can customize their area on this website in a variety of ways to give others a sense of who they are. These social networking websites are increasingly cited as new sources of our lives, including new kinds of democratic social and political activity, addiction, depression, and happiness.

Social networking sites come in a variety of forms, including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, blogs, Flickr, and others. Some of them, like LinkedIn, Viadeo, or Xing, are focused on professionals. Their goal is to establish a network of connections and feedback that will benefit businesses' flexibility as well as e-employees who may use these sites to send their resumes and get recommendations from their previous employers.

Other sites that focus on interests include Flickr, a Nobi, devian art, and Live Journal. Here, members are typically connected by shared passions, such as writing, digital arts, photography, etc. Additionally, there are social media platforms like Facebook, Orkut, My Space, Badoo, Netlog, blogs, Friendster, and Twitter. These websites let one to follow their friends' activity, communicate, view their profiles, share photos, link music, submit articles or videos, and leave comments on other people’s accounts.
