A Great Poet of English Literature:
John Donne, the head of the metaphysical school of poets, had a brilliant career before becoming Dean of St. Paul.
· His major work was delivering religious sermons, but he also penned excellent poetry.
· His most famous works are The Progress of the Soul, An Anatomy of the World, an Elegy, and Epithalamium.
· His poems can be classified into three sections:
1. Amorous
2. Metaphysical
3. Satirical
· In his amorous songs, which include his early work, he deviated from the Petrarchan style that was popular among Elizabethan writers and depicted the sensation of love in a realistic manner.
· His metaphysical and satirical pieces, which comprise a large amount of his poetry, were composed in later years.
